Detroit Casinos Scale Back Services Amid Ongoing Worker Strike.
Thousands of Detroit casino workers went on strike, resulting in the temporary closure of various services at MotorCity Casino and other gaming properties. MotorCity Casino had to curtail services on its first floor, including slot machines, high-limit table games, and the poker room. The FanDuel Sportsbook at MotorCity was closed, with no in-person wagers accepted. Some restaurants and bars were temporarily closed, along with the valet area.
This strike involved a total of 3,700 Detroit casino workers represented by the Detroit Casino Council (DCC), and it affected three properties: MotorCity Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
The casino representatives claimed to have made generous proposals to the workers, but the strike continued. The DCC and the casinos had been negotiating a new contract since September. Workers overwhelmingly authorized the strike in a recent vote.
The strike is part of a broader trend of labor disputes in the gaming and hospitality industry, with casino and hotel workers demanding better pay and working conditions. Similar strikes and labor actions have occurred in various locations, including Las Vegas.
